Online Biology Tutor (Sept 2018 – Present)

I originally moved into online tutoring while living overseas, and quickly discovered how much I enjoy it. I’m now back in the UK, based near Newcastle, continuing to support students online. I value the opportunity to build strong, supportive relationships with students and to tailor each session to their individual needs.

Working one-to-one or in small groups allows me to identify gaps in understanding and adapt my teaching in real time, something that can be challenging in a busy classroom. Online tuition is especially effective for building confidence, mastering exam technique, and helping students rediscover a love of learning.

Head of Biology – Pate’s Grammar School (Sept 2013 – Sept 2018)

I have over 15 years’ experience teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with a specialism in A-level Biology. Working at Pate’s, I led one of the top-performing Biology departments in the country, where students consistently achieved excellent GCSE and A-Level results.

My background as both a teacher and examiner means I know exactly how exam boards assess students, the common misconceptions that hold them back, and the strategies that help them succeed. Alongside subject teaching, I supported many students with their university applications, including writing personal statements for competitive courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge. I also mentored students completing the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), helping them to plan, research and present their projects with confidence.

Qualifications:

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science – 1st
PGCE Secondary Science – outstanding

What can you find me doing when I’m not tutoring or marking?

When I’m not deep in Biology or marking exam papers, you’ll usually find me out exploring Northumberland’s coastline and castles or trying (and mostly failing) to keep up in spin class. At home my two very spoiled rabbits keep me busy, and I’ve even designed them obstacle courses to stop them getting bored. Whether it’s cycling, castle hopping or rabbit entertaining, I like to stay active and have a bit of fun outside of work.

Reviews

Beatrice – May 2025 – Edexcel iGCSE Biology

My daughter considers Laura the best teacher she has ever had, in any subject! Having missed a lot of Year 10 GCSE Biology due to teacher absence at school, my daughter needed help to cover key topics and boost her confidence in Year 11 as she approached her GCSE exams. Most importantly my daughter really started to enjoy Biology and always looked forward to a lesson with Laura. She also moved from a 6/7 to an 8/9 in a remarkably short time. We cannot speak highly enough of Laura and are very grateful.
